Potatoes at PLN 1 per kilo in Poland?

2021-11-16 11:28

Potato prices in the large wholesale sector are more stable than in the small wholesale sector. On the Polish market In the latter sector we have been observing an upward trend in potato prices in recent days. Especially in those parts of the country where they were previously lower. In Łódź, at the Zjazdowa exchange and at the Kalisz exchange potato prices reached their maximum psychological level of 15 PLN per 15 kg sack, i.e. 1.00 PLN/kg. Today in Kalisz it was even 16 PLN per 15 kg bag.

In the large wholesale sector, as can be seen on the graph above, there is no sign of a clear increase in prices. At least the transaction prices. Farmers are even complaining about the current demand for potatoes. Sales prices at the large wholesalers are currently at 0.47-0.67 PLN/kg for yellow potatoes and the majority of transactions are made with prices at the bottom of the range. Red potatoes are between 0.60-0.80 PLN/kg and white potatoes between 0.73-0.90 PLN/kg.

Prices are average. If not for the large increase in production and storage costs, they could be satisfactory. However, the situation in the local wholesale sector shows that an upward trend in the large-scale trade is not out of the question. A demand stimulator would be useful here. Colder weather or greater exports. The latter may come true in the near future as Moldova is reporting a limited supply of potatoes and an increase in their prices, and Moldova is one of the most important buyers of Polish potatoes. In addition, the weak Polish zloty favours exports. Some synoptic models predict a harsh winter, so the weather factor may also play a role.
