Potatoes in Poland - prices marginally have strengthened

2021-04-23 12:03
Potato prices from the 2020 harvest have improved in recent days in terms of quotations for the large wholesaler. However, this was not a change significant enough to change the generally poor situation on the potato market. This can be seen in our chart below.

Potatoes still have one of the lowest prices in at least the last twelve years (only three seasons in this period have brought a lower average price in quotations for the last decade of April). Yellow potatoes of calibre 45+, packed in bags, are most often priced between PLN 0.33-0.47/kg, red between PLN 0.33-0.57/kg and white between PLN 0.40-0.60/kg. But these are prices for good quality, more sought-after varieties of potatoes and 'ready-made'. For example, Denar can already be bought from PLN 0.15/kg and "nice" from PLN 0.26/kg.

This recent price improvement has been between 7 and 11 per cent. Interestingly, this was not caused by a strengthening of demand as such. Interest in "old" potatoes has increased, but this increase was due to the fact that the weather has caused delays in the vegetation of early potatoes and it is already clear that this year's potato season will start later than normal. And that means a longer trade in potatoes from the 2020 harvest.

On top of this, prices for imported early potatoes have stopped falling and their average has even risen. This in turn is the result of changes in the structure of imported new potatoes, as Cyprus no longer dominates. Significant quantities of Spunta from Greece have appeared and these potatoes are priced at PLN 2.00-2.40/kg.
