Sour cherries are bursting - the end of the season in Poland?

2021-08-12 10:01
The storms and downpours which have passed over Mazowsze region in Poland (but not only, other provinces have also been affected) have hit the local fruit growers. Producers of sour cherries and plums are facing major problems. The harvest of these fruits is now in progress, and the excess water has caused these fruits to have a tendency to burst.

This is a huge challenge for cherry producers. These fruits are primarily destined for processing. And the raw material intended for freezing or compotes must not be cracked. In the area of Grojec and Warka, 40 or more litres of rain per square metre have fallen in the last 24 hours. The Łutówka fruit is cracking en masse, as you can see in the photos below.

It is known that a good calcium fertilization protects against cracking, but with such an excess of water, even this will not protect all fruit. Unfortunately, if the problem continues en masse, it may mean an early end to the sour cherry buying season for freezing. Buyers have already reacted to the drop in supply of good raw material by increasing (slightly, but always) the price. Sour cherries for freezing are currently priced at 1.60-1.70 PLN/kg. Compote sour cherries are also more expensive again: 1.70-1.80 PLN/kg and PW sour cherries 0.80-0.90 PLN/kg.
