Spanish strawberries - supply is growing, but with problems. Wholesale prices in Poland.

The strawberry campaign in Spain is still, in terms of its commercial dimension, at a fairly early stage. But the current supply of strawberries picked in the fields of Huelva is growing. The volumes harvested in December were significantly higher than in previous years. In January the supply was increasing, but the weather caused a lot of problems. It is true that the worst of the winter has passed the strawberry-growing region by, but vegetation has slowed down nonetheless, and there were logistical problems.

Now it's warmer in southern Europe, but Poland is experiencing an attack of the cold winter and we have seen a slight increase in wholesale Spanish strawberry prices, although on the Iberian Peninsula prices are still on a downward trend. There, at the end of January, prices averaged €2.40/kg and have fallen by 20 per cent in a week. Let us add that a year ago at the end of January the average price in Spain was €2.39/kg, which was almost identical to the price a year later.

Polish wholesale prices for strawberries are currently between 16.00 and 20.00 PLN per kilo, depending on the packaging. This is 2.9 per cent more expensive than last week, which is due, as mentioned above, to the weather in our country. Synoptics are forecasting that the frosty weather will stay with us, so we can expect at least a stabilisation of prices for these delicate fruits. Even despite the limited demand for them.
