Sweet pepper in Poland - prices split between wholesale and retail

2021-04-16 10:31
The supply situation in the pepper market in Spain remains dynamic, but in general the availability of this vegetable is now much better than in March and early April. The weather in Almeria has improved, which has resulted in a rapid increase in the current production of vegetables there, including peppers.

This is well illustrated by price fluctuations at wholesale auctions in Almeria. At the beginning of April they went up to as much as EUR 4/kg for red peppers. Then, at the end of the first week of this month, the average price of red bell peppers dropped to 1.90 euro/kg, and now it is 2.14 euro/kg. As we wrote, the supply of peppers is better, but the situation is not yet stable.

The shortage of the commodity and its high prices in Spain have obviously translated into the situation on the Polish market. At the end of March and the beginning of April, the average selling price of red pepper imported from Spain reached 20.00 PLN per kilogram. But then, when imports from Spain started to increase, wholesale prices quickly went down. Now they are mostly in the range of 10.00-15.00 PLN per kilo, 37.5 percent cheaper on average than at the beginning of this month's peak. However, these falling wholesale prices have become more and more confused with the still high retail prices.

Indeed, there is no sign of peppers getting cheaper in shops. Retail prices for Spanish red peppers are still around 30 PLN/kg (for good quality, larger calibres). It looks as if the retail chains have stocked up on expensive peppers, the high prices on shelves have discouraged consumers and the current demand has fallen, and shops are left with unsold expensive peppers at a time when they could be offering cheaper goods.
