The domestic cauliflower season has started in Poland

2021-05-06 11:34
The first cauliflowers of the season from domestic cultivation in Poland  have arrived at small wholesalers. This is later than last year, which is understandable given how capricious this year's spring has been. Furthermore, it must be remembered that last year the domestic cauliflower season started in a bit of a hurry.

Of course, for now the supply of domestic cauliflower is scarce, and this translates into high prices. At the Kalisz wholesale market these cauliflowers were offered at 6.00-7.00 PLN/piece. At the Bronisze near Warsaw, prices have already dropped from 6.50-7.50 PLN/piece to 5.00-7.50 PLN/piece. This is more expensive than a year ago, when Kalisz started quoting 5.00 PLN/piece.

But this year, imported cauliflowers are even more expensive than a year ago, and it was then that high import prices (5.00-7.00 zloty/unit in the larger-scale wholesale and up to 8.00 zloty/unit in the small-scale wholesale) made domestic producers want to enter the market as soon as possible. Now import prices are 6.00-8.00 zlotys/unit, and in the small wholesale they reach 10.00 zlotys/unit. So we have a similar situation, which encourages Polish producers to start the marketing season as early as possible to benefit from higher prices.

A year ago, wholesale domestic cauliflower prices remained relatively high until mid-May. At that time, this was helped by the weather and persistent import prices. This year it could be similar. Especially if the synoptics' forecasts of a cold mid-May are confirmed.
