The greater supply of mandarins in Poland than a year ago

2021-01-20 12:13

The Christmas peak in citrus demand is behind us. Anyway, this season, due to the pandemic and its impact on trade and people's behaviour, the demand was lower than expected. In addition, the supply of mandarins is significantly higher this season than in the same period last year. And with generally lower demand, this difference in supply is even more pronounced.

Another issue is the quality and appearance of the mandarins currently on offer. For the most part, these are not the best-looking fruit and, in addition, are mainly small calibres. This is the result of the adverse weather conditions that prevailed in Spain during the growing season of this fruit, and Spain dominates the Polish mandarin market. Admittedly, Greek mandarins did not stand out particularly favourably against Spanish ones.

Weaker demand, higher supply and an unfavourable appearance - it is not difficult to guess what this means for mandarin prices. As we have already written on fresh-market.pl, they have remained lower than in the same period of the previous season since November last year. And now that the Christmas "harvest" period is over, prices have fallen even further. Particularly the prices of these smaller fruit with an inferior appearance. Currently, larger-scale wholesale mandarins are offered at prices in the range of 2.60-6.00 zlotys per kilogram, which gives an average of 4.30 zlotys per kilogram, nearly 22 percent cheaper year-on-year.
