The watermelon season is in full swing in Poland

2021-07-27 11:29
Prices of watermelons imported from European countries on the Polish wholesale market have been falling since the beginning of the season. Since the beginning of June, the fruit has dropped by 58 per cent on average, with a drop of nearly 26 per cent in July alone. And no wonder, the watermelon season has entered its most abundant supply phase.

The current supply of watermelons is stable and high. This has, of course, been reflected in the aforementioned price drop. Currently, large wholesalers are selling watermelons most frequently at 1.10 - 1.60 PLN/kg, depending on the calibre, quality and country of origin. Apart from those from Southern Europe, watermelons from Hungary or Romania are also available. So, the offer is wide and everyone should find something for themselves. Low prices can also be seen at the retail level, as retail chains are racing in promotions and prices of 1.99 PLN per kilo are now a common sight.

The question is, however, whether this is already the peak of the season, not only in terms of supply, but also in terms of price levels. Current prices are averaging at 1.35 PLN/kg. This is the minimum level for this indicator from the summer season of 2020, but already in 2019 such a peak occurred in the first days of August and the average price in the large wholesalers went down to 1.20 PLN/kg. So this year too, perhaps watermelon prices will fall a little further.
