What are greenhouse tomato prices in Poland?

2021-06-23 10:10
In May, domestic greenhouse tomatoes cheapened (looking at the medium term), which is typical for this segment of greenhouse vegetables. However, it is often the case that this longer-term trend is disrupted by short-term fluctuations. In May 2021, we had such fluctuations in the first half of the month, but then a clear downward trend driven by increasing supply prevailed.

This was the result of favourable weather conditions that accelerated vegetation in greenhouses. Between 18 and 28 May, the average selling price (B tomatoes) fell by 43 per cent. It fell so low that tomatoes became a very attractively priced vegetable. Added to this was the gradual launch of the catering sector and the price trend reversed in June. By the eighth of June, the average price had rebounded by 30 per cent and stabilised for a few days.

Last week, prices for greenhouse tomatoes at the large wholesaler were falling again, but had not yet reached their May low (for size B it was PLN 2.83/kg on average). Currently, prices for B-size tomatoes are mostly at 2.83-3.16 PLN/kg and BB-size at 3.00-3.33 PLN/kg. As can be seen on the graph, this is still a relatively high price level compared to previous seasons, although the situation has changed significantly here, because the average price in the current season is no longer record high, as it was in the first two decades of June.
