What are the prices of Red Jonaprince apples in Poland?

2021-01-29 10:50
The past few seasons have not been easy for Polish growers of Red Jonaprince apples. And it did not depend on the size of the harvest of this variety and of apples in general. Of course, supply had an impact on prices, but both when prices were low and when they were high, producers of the popular "Prince" had to face the challenges of storing this variety. Both a year ago and two and three years ago, unfavourable weather at harvest time had a severe impact on this delicate variety.

As a result, there were relatively few good quality Red Jonaprince apples. This year it is no better. Prince quality problems are again a major challenge. And this can be seen in the prices. And these are clearly higher than the price levels at the beginning of 2019, when 0.60-0.70zł/kg was offered for the variety at the large wholesale. Last year, when the harvest was low, prices were much better. Buying prices were at the end of January 2020 at 1.40-1.70 zł/kg.

Now we have a price situation similar to that of last year. This week purchase prices of this variety have strengthened slightly and are currently at the level of 1.40-1.70 PLN/kg for 70+ calibre. Interestingly, stocks of Red Jonaprince are probably higher in Poland this season than a year ago. We are waiting for WAPA data on stocks as of 1 January. As of 1 December 2020, it was 180,000 tonnes against 150,000 tonnes a year earlier. If the sales dynamics are similar to last year, stocks would be around 120,000 tonnes as of 1 January 2021, and now at the end of the month could be 80-90,000 tonnes. Most of which is poorer quality apple.
