Will grapefruits get more expensive? Prices in Poland.

2021-02-09 11:38
In the current season, the end of the calendar year brought a downward correction in the prices of grapefruits imported to Poland. These fruits, imported in winter mainly from Turkey, decreased in wholesale trade on a larger scale from 5.25 PLN/kg to 5.10 PLN/kg on average. February brought a deepening of this correction and now prices of these fruits are mostly in the range of 3.50-6.00 zlotys/kg, which gives an average of 4.75 zlotys/kg.

This shows a trend opposite to what the wholesale grapefruit market in Poland was subjected to during the winter of the previous two years. Both in the winter of 2018/2019 and at the turn of 2019/2020, the fruit increased in price, although each time there were different reasons for this.

Two years ago, it was a rapidly declining following that dragged the average price of grapefruit on the Polish wholesale market from 4.10 PLN/kg to 4.40 PLN/kg (with the biggest increases of +60 per cent coming only in the summer).

A year ago the situation was stable and prices were higher than 12 months earlier. But the end of February coincided with the outbreak of the coronavirus epidemic and demand for citrus jumped. Grapefruit prices followed suit, rising from 4.40 PLN /kg (December 2019) to 5.50 PLN /kg (April 2020).

This year, the likelihood of an increase in February is less likely. First of all, it should be noted that even despite recent declines, prices for this fruit are still higher than in the same period two years ago and a year ago. There are also not as many supply problems as two years ago and there is not as much demand as during the first wave of the pandemic.
