Will there be an increase in prices of mandarins on the Polish market?

2022-03-21 10:55

At the beginning of February, we wrote about the wholesale market for mandarins on fresh-market.pl, wondering if the prices of mandarins were going to rise. This was a trend that had been apparent since the second decade of January and was a result of price changes at the largest supplier, Spain. But then, in February, this upward trend was halted and prices stabilised.

It is therefore worth returning to the question of whether mandarin prices will finally start to rise, as March is usually the period when such a trend is already well established on the basis of shrinking supply. This year, however, we do not have a typical market for mandarins.

Firstly, the prices of this fruit on the Polish market have been higher than in previous years since the beginning of the winter season and, as a result, an upward trend was more difficult to achieve. The situation with the supply of this fruit also turned out to be different. It is true that the peak availability of mandarins in Spain has long since passed, but producers and traders still have large quantities of this fruit at their disposal and, in addition, small fruit, which necessarily have lower prices, predominate in these stocks.

This stabilises the market, but the seasonal factor will eventually become apparent. Supported by rising transport and other costs. It can therefore be expected that the prices of mandarins in the Polish wholesale market will start to rise. For the time being, this fruit is offered in the wholesale trade on a larger scale from 4.00 PLN per kilo to 8.00 PLN per kilo (loose fruit, smaller and medium-sized calibres). This gives an average of 6.00 PLN/kg, which is 14% higher than in the same period last year (despite an upward trend at that time).
