Onion exports from Poland in season 2020/2021

2021-10-29 10:34
The volume of onion exports from Poland in the season 2020/2021 (from August to July) amounted to 146.5 thousand tonnes. This result is significantly weaker than that of the 2019/2020 season, when 156.9 thousand tonnes of onions were exported (-6.0 percent), as well as weaker than that of the 2018/2019 season, when 147.9 thousand tonnes were exported (-0.9 percent). Except that the differences in volumes are not as large as the differences in the value of these exports.

As for the value of onion exports, it amounted to 296.9 million PLN in the 2020/2021 season. In the 2019/2020 season it was 363.7 million PLN, so here we have a decrease by as much as 18.4 per cent. In the 2018/2019 season, the value of Polish onion exports was even higher - it amounted to 417.2 million PLN, so in relation to that season we have a decrease by as much as 28.8 per cent.

The distribution of onion exports over the individual months of the season shows typical seasonal fluctuations in volume. We have a peak in December-January and then a drop in the final phase of the season. In the graph below, you can see that the second half of the season in question was volumetrically better than the same period of the 2018/2019 season. You can also see that in July we had similar export volumes as in the previous two years.

When it comes to the distribution of onion export values by month, the 2020/2021 season shows a clear bottom in winter. The situation started to improve only in February 2021, but from April onwards the value decreased again and was lower than in the previous two years. Only July was better in 2021 in this respect.

The poor performance of the value of Polish onion exports in the winter of 2020/2021 is mainly the result of a decline in the price of this vegetable. This can be seen in the next chart. It was only in April that export prices returned to the level of the same period a year earlier, but by the end they remained much lower than in the 2018/2019 season. In June and July 2021 they were marginally better than those of the same period in 2020.
