Young potato prices fall in central Poland as domestic supply surges
Polish young potatoes now dominate the market, with wholesale prices in the Bronisze market dropping as supply from domestic farms sharply increases. Imports from Egypt and Cyprus play only a marginal role in trade.
Wholesale prices for young potatoes in the Bronisze market near Warsaw, mid-June 2026, fell to €0.47/kg (2.00 PLN/kg) for the popular Irga variety, with Arrow and Riviera varieties dropping to €0.35/kg (1.50 PLN/kg). This represents a clear decrease compared to the previous week, when Irga was priced higher and Riviera traded at similar levels.
The supply of Polish young potatoes has increased significantly, leading to a decline in the importance of imported potatoes. Imports from Egypt and Cyprus are still present at Bronisze, but their share in trade is now much smaller. Imported Mediterranean potatoes are offered at €0.47–0.59/kg (2.00–2.50 PLN/kg), but demand for them is limited as buyers prefer local produce.
Last season’s domestic potatoes have lost relevance in trade, with prices ranging from €0.16 to €0.23/kg (0.46–0.66 PLN/kg) depending on quality and variety. Some imported old potatoes from the Netherlands are available at about €0.19/kg (0.80 PLN/kg for a 10-kg bag). Buyers focus mainly on this year's Polish harvest, as the new crop becomes widely available.
There is high availability of young potatoes at wholesale markets, with many sellers present and buyer demand focused on fresh, domestic produce. The narrowing price differences between varieties reflect the strong competition and abundant supply. Weather conditions in June have generally supported the rapid harvest and market entry of early varieties.
Despite the dominance of Polish young potatoes, some buyers still choose imported Mediterranean potatoes as substitutes for old potatoes, as local young tubers are delicate and not always suitable for all culinary uses.
