In Emilia-Romagna, 70% of Italian pears are cultivated. Due to their exceptional quality in 1998, they were the first fruit to receive IGP recognition in the European Union. The Protected Geographical Indication protects producers in the vocated areas between the provinces of Reggio Emilia, Modena, Ferrara, Bologna and Ravenna (source: peradellemiliaromagnaigp.it).
