Gala apples consistently lead in prices.

This year's apple harvest in Poland and across Europe is expected to be lower than the previous season, which is reflected in the prices of these fruits in the fresh market. This is clearly visible in the case of the Gala variety. Gala apples, specifically their striped sports, remain the price leader in the segment of dessert apples in the Polish wholesale market.

Of course, we are talking about purchase prices and the export situation. Gala is not sold at a higher price in the domestic retail market. At least not yet. Later on, the situation may change in this distribution channel, especially if there is high demand for exports and a shortage of supply, Gala might disappear from the domestic market altogether.

How are the prices for dessert apple purchases for export looking? For a while, Gala prices were falling, but this turned out to be temporary. The demand for Gala has been strong since the beginning of the regular season. On the other hand, there is a common belief among market participants that there is a shortage of Est variety apples, and suppliers will have to be paid well for them. This belief is reflected in current prices and the emerging price trend for the future.

Currently, the purchase prices for Gala 70+ apples are mostly between 2.00-2.50 PLN/kg, depending on the region of the country. Last year, the average was 1.70 PLN/kg, so prices are now on average 32 percent higher. The purchase prices for Gala 65+ are mostly in the range of 1.70-2.00 PLN/kg, compared to an average of 1.40 PLN/kg last year. Therefore, we see a similar increase as with the 70+ caliber. If this difference were to be maintained until spring, by June 2025, the average price for Gala 70+ from CA will exceed 4.00 PLN/kg.
