Industrial apples - will prices rise even more?

2024-09-03 08:00

The price cuts for industrial apples that processors enforced in the first two decades of last month turned out to be temporary. They were unable to sustain due to the fact that the supply of industrial apples is much lower than the current demand for this raw material. The end of August brought a rebound in industrial prices.

Currently, the prices for regular industrial apples at purchasing points mostly range from 0.95-1.00 PLN/kg (0.22-0.23 EUR/kg), while for dried industrial apples, the prices are 0.96-1.10 PLN/kg (0.22-0.26 EUR/kg). The prices for peeled apples are mostly 12.30 PLN/kg (2.87 EUR/kg). The situation in this market looks very interesting. Why?

Firstly, it turned out that those market participants who expected the mentioned price cuts to not permanently lower prices were correct. However, it is worth noting that despite subsequent increases at purchase points, industrial prices on average are still slightly lower than at the price peak at the beginning of last month. Regular industrial apples are on average 11 percent cheaper than at that time, and dried industrial apples remain 14 percent cheaper. On the other hand, it is important to consider that currently prices are the highest in at least the last decade, except for the mentioned price peak at the end of July and beginning of August this year.

So, is there potential in the industrial apple market for further increases in purchase prices? The aforementioned period from the end of July to August clearly showed us that higher prices are possible. The question is whether orchardists will see them as early as September or if they will have to wait longer.
