Polish early apples are already on the market.

2024-07-01 09:15

The 2024/2025 apple season in Poland has just started, marking an earlier-than-usual beginning for the campaign. This early start is not surprising this year, as it applies to all fruits. In June, the first batches of early apples of the Early Geneva and traditional Papierówka (Yellow Olive) varieties were introduced to the Polish market. Wholesale prices for the first batches of early apples are quite varied regionally, with purchase offers mostly ranging from 2.00 to 3.00 PLN/kg, which is approximately 0.47 to 0.70 EUR/kg when converted at an exchange rate of 1 EUR = 4.3 PLN.

Initially, prices ranged between 2.50 and 3.50 PLN/kg, translating to approximately 0.58 to 0.81 EUR/kg. In small wholesale markets, prices for early apples range from 2.67 PLN/kg (40 PLN for 15 kg, or about 0.62 EUR/kg) to even 6.00 PLN/kg (90 PLN for 15 kg, or about 1.40 EUR/kg). As evident, the price differences are significant.

This year's season is starting earlier than usual and much earlier than last year, but the initial wholesale trade prices are at a similar level to the beginning of the 2023 campaign. Just like back then, we already see a certain drop in the average price at the beginning.

However, it's important to note that trading in Geneva and Papierówka apples represents a very preliminary phase of the new season. The production of these apples is small-scale, and wholesale trade will start on a larger scale with the appearance of the Piros variety.

The early start of the apple season is reflective of the broader trend of fruits maturing sooner this year, influenced by the weather conditions. This trend has both positive and negative implications for growers and traders, with early market entry potentially offering competitive advantages but also posing challenges due to price volatility.

As the season progresses and larger volumes of apples, particularly the Piros variety, enter the market, it will be interesting to observe how prices adjust and what trends emerge in the wholesale and retail sectors. For now, consumers and traders alike should be prepared for variability and keep a close watch on market developments.
