The prince is still at large.
June brought a decrease in interest in apples in Poland. This is a natural phenomenon related to the seasonality of the fruit market. Stocks of apples from the previous harvest are running out, the quality of these fruits is weakening, and consumers are tempted by a variety of soft and stone fruits on the market.
However, the decline in demand for apples did not spread evenly across all varieties in recent weeks. Red Jonaprince remained among those that enjoyed higher interest from buyers in the Polish wholesale market. This was reflected in the June prices.
The fruit market.
Red Jonaprince ended June with prices offered for good quality apples (caliber 70+ mm) in the range of 0.53-0.65 EUR/kg. However, by the end of last month, the decline in demand was also noticeable for this variety. In July, Prince's prices are already slightly lower, ranging from 0.51 EUR/kg to 0.60 EUR/kg most frequently. There are even companies offering prices below 0.47 EUR/kg.
It is worth noting that in April and May, according to data provided by WAPA, the departure of the Red Jonaprince variety from Polish warehouses was significantly lower than in the same months of the previous year. According to this information, in April, 35 thousand tons of these apples were removed from domestic warehouses (50 thousand tons the previous year), and in May, 20 thousand tons were removed (40 thousand tons the previous year).
As we can see, the demand for Prince, better than for Golden or red varieties like Jonagored, was still much weaker in year-on-year comparison, which is typical for this year's Polish apple market. However, remember that lower demand does not mean it was low. No, Prince was still sought after until the end, and its stocks on June 1st were significantly lower than the previous year, as they were already only 35 thousand tons, 15 thousand tons less than on June 1, 2023. This means that now, at the beginning of July, trading with this variety in Poland is definitively coming to an end.
