Blueberry prices down again?
Last weekend brought a halt, and even a reversal of the downward trend in wholesale prices of highbush blueberries on the Polish market. However, this was apparently a temporary phenomenon. There are already signals in the market that the blueberry market is returning to its old downward tracks. This is not good news for the producers of these fruits.
As seen in our chart and as we described on the pages of fresh-market.pl, halting this declining trend (not to mention reversing it) would result in a significant qualitative change in the situation on the Polish blueberry market. The current average price could improve in relation to its value in similar periods in previous years. As shown in the chart, in previous seasons, the breakthrough between July and August always brought significant price reductions in large wholesale quantities.
Currently, prices range from 10.00-16.00 PLN/kg (2.33-3.73 EUR/kg) most often, depending on the caliber, packaging, and quality. But most likely tomorrow, the average will be lower again. The question is, how significant could this price drop be? The average should not fall below 10.00 PLN/kg (2.33 EUR/kg). The weather is still not optimal, but blueberry supply has always increased at this time of year. In the industrial blueberry procurement, after a slight correction from the first decade of July, prices remain stable in the range of 6.50-8.00 PLN/kg (1.51-1.86 EUR/kg).
Nevertheless, there is a chance that this peak supply phase will end faster than usual this season. And then prices will start to strengthen. Will it happen as we observed in the strawberry market? After a very weak-priced first part of the season, will the second phase bring a strong upward trend?
