There are still few fresh blueberries.
In the Polish market, there are no longer any native fresh blueberries, and the supply of imported ones remains relatively low, although it should be noted that there has been an improvement in this regard in the past decade. Significant enough to be reflected in prices.
The increase in the current volumes of blueberries imported to Poland (and generally to Europe) was made possible by an improvement in the supply situation in the Peruvian market. The harvesting season there is picking up pace, albeit with difficulties. The question is, will these difficulties be as significant as they were last autumn? It seems that things are slightly better now. In 2023, precisely at the end of October and the beginning of November, we experienced the greatest shortage of blueberries from Peru, resulting in the highest prices.
It's not surprising then that currently the average wholesale price of Peruvian blueberries in Poland is slightly lower than it was back then (-3 percent). The current selling prices range from 58.00-80.00 PLN/kg, depending on packaging and fruit quality. This results in an average of 69.00 PLN/kg compared to 71.00 PLN/kg a year ago. However, as seen on our chart, current prices are still significantly higher than those from two or three years ago (+109 percent on average).
Last year, blueberry prices on the global market started to rapidly decrease in November. And this season might be similar. In November, the low supply of Peruvian fruits will start to be supplemented by Chilean offerings. Then Morocco and Spain will enter the game with significantly cheaper fruits that don't need to be imported from the other side of the world.
