The prices for buying blackcurrants in Poland are still below expectations.

2024-06-24 08:35

A year ago, the currant picking season only started in July. Usually, it is in July that the currant campaign reaches full swing in Poland. However, this year it started noticeably earlier and is currently in full swing.

Nevertheless, the volumes of picked currants are still not large, but that is because this year's crops of these fruits do not allow for it. There are few currants, and there will be few until the end of the picking campaign. This is reflected in the prices. However, it should also be noted that the picking prices still do not meet the expectations of the producers. This is especially noticeable in the black currant segment, as there is traditionally not much demand for colored currants.

Of course, red currant picking prices also remain higher than in previous years, as we wrote on the fresh-market.pl website. But the current picking prices, which are most often between 1.20-2.00 PLN/kg, depending on the region of the country (although lower rates have already started to appear), do not compare at all to black currant prices.

Currently, black currant picking prices are most often between 6.00-8.50 PLN/kg. It is worth noting that in this case, lower offers have appeared compared to the beginning of the season. For comparison - a year ago at the start of the season, at the beginning of July, it was only 2.00 PLN/kg, but in the last five years, in the best season (2022), black currant picking prices were between 5.00 and 8.00 PLN/kg, comparable to the current prices.

However, neither the picking prices of these fruits at 6.00 PLN/kg, 8.50 PLN/kg, nor even 9.00 PLN/kg, meet the expectations of the producers. They particularly expect prices at the level of 10.00-11.00 PLN/kg for these fruits. Are these realistic? It seems that some price increase in July is very likely. As mentioned earlier, the supply will remain low, and processing plants will need to pick certain amounts of currants. Therefore, demand is high. Achieving 9.00 PLN/kg is possible, but higher? We will see.
