Fewer farmers, more technology: the new picture of Italian agriculture

In 1930, Italy had 4.2 million agricultural farms, with a total agricultural land area of 26.3 million hectares (Figure 1). The first official agricultural census in 1961 found a situation very similar to that of 1930, but between 1961 and 1970, the number of farms decreased from 4.3 million to 3.6 million.
