Alwa is more expensive than other apples.
The prices of apples in the Polish wholesale market generally remain higher than in the same period last year, although there are exceptions. The higher prices are a result of low yields, but there is also a noticeable differentiation in demand for individual varieties in the market. Traditionally, Gala leads in terms of price rates. On the other hand, for another season in a row, Golden disappoints with its prices. And how is Alwa performing?
In previous years, Alwa clearly stood out in the Polish market, in terms of prices achieved in large-scale wholesale, among the offer of Polish red apples. In small-scale wholesale and retail, it varied, but companies buying dessert apples for large-scale wholesale and export paid better prices for Alwa.
This year, the beginning of the season did not hint at a repeat of such a scenario, as both the demand and prices for apples of this variety did not stand out from the rest of the "red apples." However, symptoms of a change in this situation quickly appeared. Already in the second half of October, Alwa prices were above the average for red varieties (also above Golden or Mutsu). It is worth noting that even earlier, when Alwa prices were at the same level as, for example, Champion prices, it was still higher than in equivalent periods of the previous five seasons.
Currently, purchase prices for Alwa in sorting (caliber 70+) range from 1.80 to 2.20 PLN/kg, remaining stable at this level since mid-last week. It seems that further strengthening of prices before the end of 2024 is possible, but these will not be significant increases and may not occur until the last decade of November. But who knows? The market is atypical this season and may surprise us.
