Prices of Jonaprince apples for now without surprises.

2024-10-30 09:56

In recent years, Red Jonaprince apples were among the most sought-after in Poland for export and on the domestic retail market. As a result, they had higher prices in the Polish wholesale market than other traditional red varieties. This also led to a rapid increase in their popularity among growers to the point where Prince is now the dominant variety in Polish apple production.

However, the popularity of this variety among producers has also made it increasingly difficult in recent seasons to achieve a significant price advantage compared to other "red apples." In the 2022/2023 season, there were instances where Prince's prices fell to the level of Idared (which, incidentally, has held up much better than forecasted a few years ago). In the 2023/2024 season, Prince managed to defend its position.

And how does it look so far in the current season?

For now, Prince's prices are noticeably higher, but we must remember that Idared may see significant price increases in the second half of the season this year. As for Jonaprince? It is known that this year's harvest is worse than last year's, which likely affects this variety as well, as indicated by the season's progress so far.

Currently, prices at collection points range from 1.60-1.80 PLN/kg for sorting apples (cal. 70+). As seen in the second graph, this is higher than in all the previous five seasons. However, the advantage over last year is not significant. Some other varieties are performing better in this regard. Additionally, the current prices for Prince are not significantly above the range of prices for other Polish red varieties, which usually range from 1.50-1.70 PLN/kg. Ligol has the same prices as Prince.

In conclusion, the prices of Red Jonaprince apples are following the typical patterns for Polish apples in the current season. They are slightly higher than prices from the same period last year. The advantage of this variety over other "red apples" is not significant. So far, there are no surprises. The Prince market is developing as expected.
