Prices for buying currants are going down.
The gooseberry harvest season in Poland as usual is deeply overshadowed by the strawberry campaign (which is ending quickly this year) and the currant campaign. And now the cherry harvest for processing is also starting. Despite Poland being the largest producer of gooseberries in Europe, it still remains a secondary fruit for processors. And that too in only a few facilities. In such circumstances, it is not surprising that even in a year of low yields, there is pressure on gooseberry purchase prices. Prices remained fairly stable in the first part of the campaign. However, recently, there have been buyers offering lower prices. The difference between this year and previous years is that now, despite the drop in the average price, this indicator still remains relatively high compared to what we have seen in previous years. Furthermore, it is still evident in the market that many producers demand higher prices for their gooseberries than those proposed by buyers. Currently, the proposed prices range from 1.50-2.50 PLN/kg, on average 11 percent lower than at the beginning of the season when prices in the range of 2.00-2.50 PLN/kg dominated. At the same time, there are producers offering up to 3.00 PLN/kg for mechanically harvested gooseberries. As mentioned above, current prices, despite the discount, are still higher than those in previous years. The average now is 2.00 PLN/kg. Last year we had only 0.90 PLN/kg, two years ago 0.85 PLN/kg, and three years ago 0.60 PLN/kg. Interestingly, and worth highlighting, in all the mentioned earlier seasons, gooseberry purchase prices at the end of June and the beginning of July were increasing. For example, last year to an average level of 1.20 PLN/kg (+33.3 percent).
