Cheaper peaches and nectarines

2024-06-21 08:39

The season of imported stone fruits is ongoing. In the case of peaches, nectarines, and apricots, we have been experiencing a long-standing trend of decreasing wholesale prices, driven by the high supply of these fruits. This is not good news for Polish stone fruit producers, who are just starting a new harvesting campaign.

However, it is important to remember that a prolonged downward trend in the prices of a certain product does not necessarily mean that it is already cheap. It all depends on the starting price levels, the dynamics of the trend, and the price levels seen in previous years. How do stone fruits fare in such an analysis?

Unfortunately, the current situation, compared to the previous season, is clearly unfavorable. Specifically, the situation is unfavorable in the peach and nectarine segment. The prices of apricots in the Polish wholesale market broke out of this general downward trend at the end of last week and strengthened to the level of 8.00-12.00 PLN/kg on a larger scale. This means a return to prices from the beginning of June this year and comparable to those from the first half of June 2023.

In the case of peaches and nectarines, there was no such upward rebound. We continue to see dynamic decreases in their prices in the Polish wholesale market. Currently, peaches are being offered at 4.00-7.00 PLN/kg most often, and nectarines at 5.50-7.00 PLN/kg most often. Since the beginning of June, we have seen a price decrease averaging 31% for peaches and 34% for nectarines. Furthermore, the current average prices of these fruits are already lower than last year. In fact, these current prices are comparable to the prices that peaches and nectarines achieved in 2023 at the end of June.
