Industrial pear wanted

In the fresh fruit market, we have seen a decrease in the price of pears in the last two weeks. Currently, these fruits are cheaper than in the same period of the very good 2023/2024 season. The drop in the price of dessert pears is, of course, a result of ongoing harvests and an increase in the current supply during this period, as well as the lack of demand for these fruits in exports.

The situation is different in the processing sector. The demand for pears for processing remains high. Currently, the purchase prices of these fruits are higher year on year (opposite to the fresh fruit market). However, will this trend continue in the coming weeks?

Let's remember that last year, the pear processing market experienced a significant price increase after the end of the harvest, which was after October 11th. On October 10th, 2023, the average purchase price was 0.63 PLN/kg (due to the low prices of pears for juice at 0.60-0.70 PLN/kg mostly, as those for alcohol had prices up to 1.50 PLN/kg), and by October 17th, it had risen to 1.25 PLN/kg!

Currently, the purchase prices of pears show a certain upward trend (+10% in the past week), with the current level being mostly between 1.00-1.30 PLN/kg. This is still higher year on year, by almost 44%. However, if the purchase prices of these fruits do not increase by at least another 9-10% in the next week, the current average price will fall below the level from the same period last year. The demand for industrial pears provides grounds for some optimism, and the current supply of fruits may decrease rapidly.
