The first pears of the new season.

The 2023/2024 pear trading season turned out to be quite good for Polish orchardists. Despite relatively high yields (just under 2 percent lower than in 2022, but better than in the years 2019-2021), wholesale prices of our domestic pears were higher throughout almost the entire campaign than in the previous five seasons.

But this successful 2023/2024 campaign is already behind us, and another season has already started in Poland. The first pears from domestic orchards have appeared on the market – it's an early variety of Klaps pear (Faworytka). Similar to other domestic fruits, the start of this pear season happened earlier than usual. Of course, the supply of Klaps pears is small on a national scale. There is no talk of any large wholesale quantities. But locally, on wholesale markets, pears are already arriving.

And how are the prices of Klaps pears shaping up in small wholesale and orchard offers? These prices do not differ much. Orchardists most often offer early pears at prices ranging from 4.00-4.50 PLN/kg (0.93-1.05 EUR/kg), although there are also offers at 5.00 PLN/kg (1.17 EUR/kg). Meanwhile, on wholesale markets, Faworytka pears are most commonly offered at 4.00-5.50 PLN/kg (0.93-1.28 EUR/kg). As you can see, the difference is almost negligible.

For comparison, let's add that last year the trade of this variety started in August with prices averaging 5.50 PLN/kg (1.28 EUR/kg). And the price level we have now, in the previous year, these pears reached only at the beginning of the second decade of August. However, last year was exceptional in terms of pear market prices, as we wrote at the beginning of this text. Furthermore, in the 2022 season of Klaps pears, although it also started in August, the initial prices averaged at 4.50 PLN/kg (1.05 EUR/kg), which is what we have now in the 2024/2025 season.
