The prices of pears have gone up, but...
This year, the price situation in the Polish pear market, similar to previous years, is again better than in the apple market. However, this time we are seeing a decrease in wholesale prices for domestic pears year-on-year. Currently, there is an average decrease of 40 groszy per kilogram for the Konferencja variety of pears, which amounts to a relative decrease of -15 percent.
Moreover, significantly, this 15 percent decrease comes after the recent price improvement in the Polish wholesale pear market. In recent days, we have seen prices strengthen to the range of 2.80-4.00 PLN/kg for beautiful and thicker Konferencja pears. Other, less popular varieties are priced at 2.50-3.50 PLN/kg on average (Lukas, Paten).
This is a significant increase, almost 10 percent compared to last week. Such increases are not common in October. A similar situation occurred last year, but at a higher price level. However, the October increase then was not sustainable. Supply pressure led to a quick correction, and a sustainable increase in prices came in the second half of November 2023.
Will it be the same now? Is it too early for a stable improvement in Polish pear prices? Especially with the current import from EU countries in our market. However, the prices for these Konferencja pears in the wholesale market are currently at 4.80-5.00 PLN/kg, leaving some room for improvement in the domestic market. It seems that prices may not necessarily decrease in October, even for a short period.
