What are the prices of pears?
Is there a chance this season for a repeat of last year's scenario on the dessert pear market, where the prices of these fruits practically did not fall? And, above all, throughout the season they remained higher than in previous campaigns. It may have seemed that way at the end of September, but subsequent days brought price drops for pears in the Polish wholesale market.
Currently, the prices of Conference pears, the most popular and dominant variety throughout Europe, in large wholesale quantities range from 2.70 to 3.50 PLN/kg, depending on the region of the country, primarily on the caliber and quality. The predominant price in this range is 3.00 PLN/kg. Prices of other varieties, such as Lukas or Xenia, are in the range of 2.00-3.00 PLN/kg.
We are clearly witnessing a departure from last year's scenario, and this is happening at the beginning of the main part of the trading season. It should also be noted that this price drop is occurring in a year where yields will be lower than last year. According to the latest forecasts from GUS, they are expected to be 74.1 thousand tons, which is 6 percent less year over year.
It appears that this season, at least in its autumn phase, will be marked by lower pear prices in the Polish wholesale market. Interestingly, this applies to the fresh market. In terms of pears for processing, prices are significantly higher than last year. Currently, pears for processing are mostly bought at prices of 1.00-1.20 PLN/kg, averaging 1.10 PLN/kg (pears for drying even at 1.50 PLN/kg).
Last year, the average purchase price of these fruits was still 0.63 PLN/kg. It began to rise only after October 9, 2023, but once this trend was activated, it quickly pushed the price of processing pears to 1.25 PLN/kg. In the peak price period of the previous season, at the turn of 2023 and 2024, it was even 1.50 PLN/kg.
