Plums are getting cheaper now.

2024-07-22 09:30

The Polish plum season is still in its early stages and far from reaching its peak supply. However, it is important to note that this year it started much earlier than usual, which is affecting the pricing reality. We are already seeing significant pressure on the prices of Polish plums in the wholesale market.

And this pressure is effective. Domestic plums are getting cheaper. However, the earlier-than-usual increase in supply is not the only reason for the price drop. There is also pressure from the abundant import market. Currently, the dominant variety in the import market is the Cacanska Lepotika from Serbia, with wholesale prices ranging from 4.00-5.00 PLN/kg. Interestingly, this is not a highly competitive level compared to the prices of Lepotika from our domestic orchards.

The prices of Polish plums (both Lepotika and Rany) are now mostly between 2.50-3.50 PLN/kg (0.58-0.82 EUR/kg). Despite this, there is still demand for imported plums in our market. Unfortunately, there will be no improvement in this regard. Once the import from Serbia ends, there will be even greater pressure from later varieties of plums imported from Moldova. Moldova is a plum powerhouse, and moreover, the European Union allows Moldovan plums into its market on preferential terms (duty-free quota).

Therefore, the pressure on the prices of Polish plums will not only continue but most likely intensify. Even though this year's harvest in Poland is low, the prices of our domestic plums may not drop as much as we saw last year, but they will definitely decrease.
