The prices of dessert plums are driven by pressure.
This year's plum campaign in Poland is progressing according to a clearly accelerated schedule compared to the typical seasonal calendar. On the market, not only has the availability of varieties such as Amers or Jubileum increased, but Węgierki varieties have been available for several weeks now, and the domestic President has started appearing on the market.
Furthermore, the domestic market is still being flooded with imported plums. This year, there is an increase in interest in the Polish market from Moldovan exporters. It is worth reminding that Moldova operates in the EU market under privileged conditions, as it can export fruits within duty-free quotas. Plums are one of the main items.
This import, along with the growing domestic supply, is creating a constant pressure to lower wholesale plum prices. However, at least for now, these prices are resisting a downward trend. This is partly due to a good demand for plums for processing, which attracts lower-quality fruits from the fresh market, reducing the pressure slightly.
Nevertheless, the pressure is still visible. The current prices for domestic plums in large quantities are mostly between 3.50-4.00 PLN/kg (0.82-0.94 EUR/kg) for varieties such as Jubileum, Mieszaniec, and Haganta. These same prices are commonly offered by producers for the first batches of President and Top Hit. There are also offers at 3.00 PLN/kg (0.70 EUR/kg). Last year, Mieszaniec and Jubileum plums were also offered at 3.50-4.00 PLN/kg (0.82-0.94 EUR/kg). Furthermore, these prices held steady until the end of August. President appeared in large quantities only at the beginning of September last year.
The price range of 3.00-4.00 PLN/kg (0.70-0.94 EUR/kg) also applies to Lepotica. Last year, it was 2.50-3.50 PLN/kg (0.59-0.82 EUR/kg), which was already significant. In August 2022, the prices of these plums in the Polish wholesale market had already dropped to just 1.00 PLN/kg (0.23 EUR/kg).
Similarly, regular Węgierka plums in the fresh market are usually priced between 3.00-4.00 PLN/kg (0.70-0.94 EUR/kg). It is also challenging to compare with the previous season as wholesale trading of Węgierka started later. However, the prices of the first batches that entered the market in the second half of August 2023 ranged from 2.50-3.50 PLN/kg (0.59-0.82 EUR/kg).
