The supply of watermelons has increased, but...

2024-07-05 09:00

The supply of watermelons in the Polish wholesale market has been increasing since the beginning of May, leading to a clear seasonal downward trend in their wholesale prices. However, in the second half of June, there was a noticeable disturbance in these seasonal trends. This disturbance was significant but temporary. Before the end of last month, typical trends for this time of the season returned to the wholesale watermelon market. During this period, the selling prices of watermelons in large quantities decreased by an average of another 8 percent. Currently, prices range from 0.37 to 0.70 EUR/kg.

There is a significant price differentiation due to the increasing variety of types and countries of origin of these fruits in Poland. The cheapest fruits are imported from Romania, slightly more expensive ones are from Greece, and the most expensive are from Spain. Importantly, domestic watermelons are now entering the market. Their prices are the highest, and supply is still relatively low for now. However, in recent years, there has been a growing trend in the production of Polish watermelons.

Currently, selling prices from producers start at 0.47 EUR/kg. Do the increased supply and the aforementioned price decline trend mean that our domestic fresh watermelon market is already saturated? Even from the prices, it can be seen that we have not yet reached the peak of supply. Despite the decreases, the prices of these fruits remain relatively high. The peak supply and market saturation are expected towards the end of this month and the beginning of the next.
