A year ago, March brought a sharp rise in lemon prices in Europe, including Poland. This was due to the fact that the CoVID-19 epidemic had reached the Old Continent. The crisis caused by this epidemic then caused a sharp rise in demand for fruit and vegetables.

Lemons in Poland are very cheap for now

Lemon prices in the Polish wholesale market have remained at a very low level since January this year. In the offers of importers, in the wholesale trade on a larger scale, they are most often offered at 3.00-5.50 PLN per kg, depending on the country of origin, packaging and quality. The offer is dominated by fruit from two countries - Turkey and Spain (the former are usually cheaper).

Production of frozen food and juices in Poland 2020

We analyse the CSO data for the whole year 2020 and the production of frozen vegetables and fruit and vegetable juices as well as vegetable pickles. In this period, we can see a decrease in the production sector of juices, frozen vegetables and especially frozen fruits in relation to 2019. Only in the category of vegetable pickles the CSO recorded a year-on-year increase in production.

Citrus growers' and exporters' hopes that the second wave of the pandemic would bring a repeat of demand and prices for lemons from last spring have proved to be dashed. Demand for this fruit (and other citrus) remains good, but not so good as to repeat the price increases as occurred in late winter and spring last year.

In the first half of 2020, the price of lemons grew dynamically, but this trend did not start until the end of January and accelerated as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak spreading across Europe.
