Broccoli has become slightly cheaper.
During the Polish calendar summer, broccoli started off with high prices in the wholesale fresh market. These were not only the highest prices compared to the previous five seasons, as shown in the chart above, but they were also record-high prices in fifteen years (according to data from the daily price monitoring by the editorial team of fresh-market.pl).
Currently, broccoli prices in the Polish wholesale market have slightly decreased but are still relatively high, as also seen in the presented chart. The current selling prices are mostly in the range of 0.70-0.93 EUR per piece. This is nearly 18 percent lower than at the end of last month, but still 34 percent higher than the average of the previous five seasons.
The higher broccoli prices are a result of limitations in the current supply of these vegetables, which is strongly correlated with weather conditions. Recently, the weather has been far from optimal. Furthermore, according to meteorologists' forecasts, the weather in the coming days will also pose challenges for vegetable producers, including broccoli. Despite this, there will likely be more broccoli available, but not enough to bring prices in the wholesale fresh market below the long-term average in the coming days.
Simultaneously, the campaign to buy broccoli for processing is ongoing. Based on our data, the prices for broccoli purchased in bulk are currently 0.30-0.37 EUR per kilogram, depending on quality, while for broccoli sold as florets, the prices are 0.70-0.74 EUR per kilogram. This represents a decrease of around 10-12 percent compared to the previous year.
