Cabbage is more expensive now.

A year ago, young white cabbage was becoming cheaper in the Polish wholesale market, but prices had the potential to decrease further because by the middle of July 2023, they remained higher than in the previous five seasons. In the current year, market trends for this vegetable are the opposite of what they were then. Young cabbage is getting more expensive in the wholesale market, and the reason for this is unfavorable weather conditions that are negatively affecting the current supply.

Heatwaves and rains have not directly affected the growth rate and development of cabbage heads, as this vegetable is relatively resistant in that aspect. However, there has been a significant increase in pressure from pests and the frequency of diseases caused by microorganisms. This problem is very serious and it affects both the supply and quality of cabbage.

As a result, the decline in cabbage prices in the Polish wholesale market slowed down, and then prices strengthened. Currently, the selling prices for young white cabbage in large quantities range from 1.00 to 1.60 PLN/kg (0.23 to 0.38 EUR/kg), depending mostly on the quality of the heads and the region of the country. This means that during the current month, the price of this cabbage has increased by an average of one-third.

This is a significant change. We can clearly see this on our chart. The average price in the large wholesale market has pulled itself out of the bottom and managed to reach the level of the long-term average. Of course, it is still much cheaper than a year ago, not to mention in comparison to the 2019 season, but there is a chance that in the current campaign, cabbage prices will follow the path of 2022 when, for similar reasons as now, there were supply problems in the market, and prices in the large wholesale market strengthened until the end of July.
