Red cabbage - it was more expensive, but only temporarily.
The red cabbage season of 2024 is just gaining momentum, although like with other vegetables, it started earlier than usual. It began with prices much lower than last year. It is important to remember that last year the supply situation for many Polish vegetables was very unfavorable, leading to record prices. This was also the case with red cabbage. In July 2023, the average wholesale price started at 3.75 PLN/kg (0.87 EUR/kg), but this year it was only 2.40 PLN/kg (0.56 EUR/kg), even though the season started in June.
From the beginning of the current campaign, red cabbage prices quickly dropped to an average of 1.40 PLN/kg (0.33 EUR/kg) in the second decade of this month. However, there was then a rebound. The effects of the extremely hot weather influenced the supply of red cabbage, especially the good quality ones. Prices jumped by 36 percent to a range of 1.50-2.10 PLN/kg (0.35-0.49 EUR/kg).
It may have seemed like a reversal of the trend, but it turned out to be only a temporary correction. Prices have fallen again. Currently, wholesale prices range between 1.30-2.00 PLN/kg (0.30-0.47 EUR/kg). There is a clear increase in the supply of red cabbage in the market. Undoubtedly, many producers, seeing such good prices, have intensified their deliveries.
Currently, prices average at 1.65 PLN/kg (0.38 EUR/kg), one of the lowest in the last five years. In 2022, it was 1.60 PLN/kg (0.37 EUR/kg), only slightly lower. The end of July 2020 was much worse, with an average wholesale price of only 0.50 PLN/kg (0.12 EUR/kg). The current season is far from reaching that level, and the likelihood of such significant drops during the summer is virtually zero.
