Ten-day period for reviving the increase in prices of white cabbage in Poland?
Prices of white cabbage in the Polish wholesale market have recently been experiencing significant fluctuations. However, they still remain at record levels compared to the last decade. There is little time left for this relationship to
remain unchanged. Quick revival of the upward trend in cabbage prices is necessary.
Cabbage Prices Must Increase Quickly to Maintain an Upward Trend
The stability of cabbage prices is not enough. A quick revival of the upward trend in cabbage prices is necessary. This needs to happen within the next ten days. However, speed alone will not be sufficient. A significant dynamism in this potential upward trend is also required. Why? As shown in our chart, the period during which the current price, even if stable, remains higher than in the past decade is already short.
In March 2019, during the last ten days of the month, there was a sharp increase in white cabbage prices on the Polish wholesale market, driven by high export demand. At that time, the average selling price reached 0.55 EUR/kg (equivalent to 2.30 PLN/kg at the time).
Currently, prices for market-quality cabbage, packed in bags or cartons, range from 0.48 EUR/kg (2.00 PLN/kg) to 0.60 EUR/kg (2.50 PLN/kg), with an average of 0.54 EUR/kg (2.25 PLN/kg).
In 2019, prices reached the highest level of the past decade in the second ten days of January and remained at that level until the end of the campaign. However, in the last days of March, there was a sharp increase, with a 50% growth rate between March 23 and April 23.
To maintain an advantage over the past decade, cabbage prices should continue to rise at the same rate—or even faster—in the current season.
