The demand for cabbage has increased.

The ending week brought an improvement in demand for young white cabbage in the Polish wholesale market. The change in demand itself may not have been that significant, but it overlapped with a decrease in the supply of good quality cabbage. Problems with maintaining quality in production conditions under unfavorable weather are already visible in this market. Many producers are facing significant pressure from diseases caused by microorganisms and insect infestations.

The change in the supply-demand relationship was significant enough to affect the prices of young cabbage in the wholesale market. Certainly, such a change would be welcomed by producers because the price situation has become difficult. However, despite the increase in prices of young cabbage, it was not enough to fundamentally change the negative market outlook.

We can see this on our chart. The average selling price increased by 22 percent in the wholesale market. Currently, the prices of young cabbage in this market sector mostly range from 0.19-0.33 EUR/kg, with good quality cabbage experiencing the highest gains. However, this still yields an average below that of the previous five years. A year ago, the average price was 0.41 EUR/kg; now it's only 0.26 EUR/kg, indicating a year-on-year decrease of 37 percent. It also appears that a further significant increase in young cabbage prices (similar to what happened in the 2020 season) is unlikely. The current price is likely to remain slightly lower than the long-term average.
