Will the prices of young white cabbage reach last year's levels?

Wholesale prices of young white cabbage have been on an upward trend since the beginning of the current month. This is undoubtedly a result of unfavorable weather conditions. The current supply of young cabbage in the fresh market, instead of growing dynamically, has started to decrease. The pressure of diseases and pests, plus agricultural drought in some regions of the country, have taken their toll.

As a consequence, cabbage prices in wholesale markets have been continuously strengthening. As seen in our chart, this upward trend has already led to a fundamental change in the image of the young white cabbage market. June started with prices well below the five-year average. Now we have current prices 25 percent above the long-term average value. The price range for selling young cabbage in large wholesale markets currently ranges from 1.20 PLN/kg (0.28 EUR/kg) to even 1.80 PLN/kg (0.42 EUR/kg).

The chart also shows that it won't be long before current prices reach the levels of last year. If by the end of the current month the current average price increases by just under 17 percent, it will match the record level from 2023 (1.75 PLN/kg, 0.41 EUR/kg). This would be a significant fact impacting the rest of the white cabbage season. But even if this does not happen, but current prices do not start to drop, this fact will still affect market sentiments during the main harvest period of later varieties.
