Carrots - prices are scraping the bottom.
The drop in prices of young, trimmed carrots in the initial phase of the season is nothing out of the ordinary. It's more of a rule than an exception in conditions of rapid supply growth. We have been observing this trend since the beginning of the current commercial campaign. However, the concern lies in the level at which this is happening, and this season it doesn't look good.
This season, the downward trend in wholesale prices of early domestic carrots has been dynamic since the start. Already from June 20, the average selling price in large wholesale was lower than in the previous five seasons. This can be seen on the chart above.
Current selling prices of washed Polish carrots, packed in bags, offered in large wholesale mostly range from 0.80-1.40 PLN/kg (0.19-0.33 EUR/kg). This gives an average of 1.10 PLN/kg (0.26 EUR/kg), at a time when the lowest price recorded for July 19 was 1.50 PLN/kg (0.35 EUR/kg). Carrots cheaper than the current ones were offered (in a similar period) as long as seven years ago.
A slight comfort for producers may be the fact that the price drop is slowing down, and moreover, we see that good quality produce maintains higher prices. Quality is currently a big challenge, mainly due to weather conditions. And this is not going to change in the coming days.
