Will cauliflower be cheaper?

Wholesale prices of Polish cauliflowers in the fresh market have recently shown more frequent fluctuations. This is not surprising when it comes to these vegetables. It is rather a typical price scenario for this market in the summer.

In June, we saw a significant increase in prices of Polish cauliflowers in large wholesale, as well as a dynamic drop in the second half of the past month. The beginning of July brought another price hike, but this time it was short-lived and not as significant as the one in the first half of June. And now we are seeing a return to the downward trend.

As a result, the average selling price of cauliflowers ("ready-to-eat") in the Polish large wholesale market has dropped by nearly 12 percent over the past four days. Currently, selling prices in this wholesale market segment are mostly in the range of 3.00-4.50 PLN/piece (0.71-1.06 EUR/piece).

As seen, this is much cheaper than the peak prices in June when the average price reached 7.00 PLN/piece (1.65 EUR/piece). It is also cheaper (-25 percent) year-over-year. However, these prices are still higher than the average from the previous five seasons (+14 percent). There have been seasons in the past with lower prices at this stage of the campaign.

What can we expect in the coming days? Most likely, the downward trend in cauliflower prices in the fresh market will continue. The heat will result in more lower-quality produce, which will further push the average price down, but mainly there is an expectation of increased supply of these vegetables, which will be reflected in the price level.
