Cucumbers - supply improvement

The past few days have seen a drop in wholesale prices of Polish cucumbers. Just as greenhouse cucumbers and field cucumbers were previously increasing in price in parallel, we are now seeing price decreases in both of these segments. However, field cucumbers have become cheaper at a faster rate.

This is due to an increase in the supply of these vegetables, but the fact that there are more cucumbers on the market does not mean that there are a lot of them by any means. We are still dealing with a supply gap, albeit smaller than just a few days ago. The price changes reflect this relative improvement in cucumber availability.

As for greenhouse cucumbers, their wholesale prices have dropped from the range of 7.00-9.00 PLN/kg (1.64-2.10 EUR/kg) they reached around the middle of this month to the level of 5.00-7.00 PLN/kg (1.17-1.64 EUR/kg). This is a decrease of about one fourth on average. Quite a substantial drop for less than a week. However, our chart shows that this discount has not changed much in the pricing situation for greenhouse cucumbers. They are still at a record high price (+94% compared to the average of the previous five years).

The situation is somewhat different in the field cucumber market. As mentioned earlier, the price drop here has been more dynamic. Last week, cucumber purchase prices for pickling or canning ranged from 6.00-7.00 PLN/kg (1.40-1.64 EUR/kg). At present, their prices are mostly at the level of 3.00-4.00 PLN/kg (0.70-0.94 EUR/kg) for canning and 2.50-4.00 PLN/kg (0.59-0.94 EUR/kg) for pickling, depending on the region of the country. It is important to note that the relatively cheap imports that appeared on our market also had an impact here. The question now is what will happen next, as the weather has once again shown its power with floods in some parts of the country that inundated fields.
