The peak of cucumber supply is approaching, but...
July has just begun, which means that the peak season for domestically grown greenhouse cucumbers is fast approaching. However, looking at the wholesale prices of these vegetables, it is clear that this peak has not yet arrived. In fact, today's market prices suggest that it has even been slightly postponed due to the weather. First, there were heatwaves, and now rains and cloudy weather are affecting current harvests, mainly of field cucumbers, but also greenhouse cucumbers. Moreover, the price situation in the wholesale market for field cucumbers indirectly affects the prices of greenhouse production.
Weather forecasters are predicting a few days of worse weather ahead. As seen in the chart, the current prices of greenhouse cucumbers in large quantities are not only not low, but are actually at record highs compared to the previous five years marked on the chart. In fact, they are the highest in at least 15 years. These prices are mostly in the range of 0.70-0.93 EUR/kg. Year-on-year, we are seeing an increase of almost 56 percent. Compared to the average of the previous five years, it is an increase of 38 percent.
Of course, as is typical in the cucumber market, vegetable prices are very volatile and can enter very dynamic short-term trends, making predicting price developments particularly difficult. However, it seems with a high degree of probability that we can expect the average price of greenhouse cucumbers in large quantities to remain unusually high in the coming days, and generally this season the prices of these vegetables are unlikely to drop to the levels seen in the 2021 season, even when the peak supply finally arrives.
