Did green beans start dropping in price again?
Usually at this stage of the season, the prices of green beans remain on a downward trend, which is due to the increasing supply of this vegetable in our market. Of course, variable weather conditions can more or less disrupt such a long-term trend. And something like this happened this month.
The prices of green beans in the Polish wholesale market were significantly depressed in May and the first week of June, but then this downward trend clearly slowed down. And even at the beginning of the second half of this month, it was reversed. Green beans in large quantities increased to 12.00-13.00 PLN/kg. As seen in our chart, this allowed to surpass the current average price above the level of the average price over the previous five years. This is a quite fundamental change in the situation.
However, prices then fell again to the range of 8.00-12.00 PLN/kg (-20 percent), and it might have seemed that we were witnessing a return to the downward trend in wholesale prices of green beans. But the end of this week raises doubts about such a quick return of this trend. Today, bean prices in large quantities are mostly in the range of 10.00-12.00 PLN/kg. This means that the current average price still remains above that of the previous five years. Moreover, the current level of 11.00 PLN/kg equals the level from the same period in the two previous seasons. There hasn't been a higher price in the last five years according to data from June 28th.
