Onion export in the 2023/2024 season

The data from the Central Statistical Office (GUS) clearly shows that the 2023/2024 season brought a year-on-year decrease in onion exports, which is not surprising considering the poorer onion harvest in Poland. However, it is worth noting that despite the decline in export volume compared to previous seasons (2020/2021 and 2021/2022), the value was significantly better. The export volume of onions from Poland in the 2023/2024 season (from August to July) amounted to 166.8 thousand tons. This result is only slightly worse than that of the 2022/2023 season (a decrease of 6.6 percent). Compared to the 2020/2021 season, there was a decrease of 4.0 percent, and compared to the 2021/2022 season, a decrease of 6.9 percent. If we look at the value of onion exports, it reached 559.2 million PLN in the 2023/2024 season. This is 15.3 percent less than the 2022/2023 season, but still significantly higher than in previous years. Compared to the 2020/2021 season, there was an increase of 88.1 percent, and compared to the 2021/2022 season, an increase of 42.7 percent. Below are visualized data on onion exports from Poland in different months of successive seasons. As shown, in the 2023/2024 campaign, the peak of exports was from January to April. The highest volume and value were recorded in March 2024 (19.8 thousand tons and 64.1 million PLN), but relatively speaking - compared to previous years, April 2024 was the best month, with higher volume than in two out of three previous Aprils and the highest value. The high export value was made possible by good prices achieved for Polish onions. Although not as record-breaking as in the second half of the 2022/2023 campaign, they were still significantly better than in previous years. The chart below shows that the situation did not develop as favorably as in the 2022/2023 season. However, it is worth noting that the average monthly price did not drop below 3 PLN/kg throughout the last campaign. The current season's start for the export volume of Polish onions is worse than in the same period in the 2020/2021, 2022/2023, and 2023/2024 seasons. In terms of value, it looks better - there was a decrease compared to two out of the four previous campaigns (2022/2023 and 2023/2024). The average price at 3.36 PLN/kg was only 2 grosze worse than the previous year. Lastly, let's take a look at the destinations of Polish onion exports. Below is a comparison of the top ten recipients in the 2023/2024 season. The leader is obvious, as the top three recipients dominate the entire list (nearly 65 percent of Polish onion exports overall).
