Onions in trouble.
This year's summer brought high temperatures. There were also sudden, heavy rainfall. However, these rains were local and short-lived. They did not prevent the onion bulbs from drying out nationwide, but only contributed to the increased pressure of diseases and pests.
For now, winter onions are still available on the Polish market and there is still plenty of them. Considering the current demand on the Polish market, there is still a lot of this "winter variety". But this will soon change. The yields of spring onion bulbs will not be as good as winter onions, and the seeded onions are drying out. So, what awaits the onion market in Poland in the relatively near future?
We had a similar situation a year and two years ago. Onion prices in wholesale began to rise quite quickly back in early August. However, in those two previous seasons, the situation with the winter variety was also worse. This is reflected in the prices.
Currently, onions are very cheap. Wholesale selling prices for bagged onions are currently only 0.80-1.20 PLN/kg (0.19-0.28 EUR/kg) and remain stable. This is on average 35 percent cheaper than a year ago and 20 percent cheaper than two years ago. However, it is also significant that onion prices have stopped falling and the most likely scenario is a relatively quick tendency for these prices to rise.
