Onion prices are still below average.

Let us remind that in the summer, the Central Statistical Office (GUS) estimated that this year's onion harvest in Poland would reach as much as 695 thousand tons, almost 10 percent more than last year and the highest since 2009! In this context, it is not surprising that onion prices in the Polish wholesale market are far from record levels and have remained significantly below the average of the previous five years since the beginning of the campaign.

However, it is worth noting that despite this, the prices of domestic onions show an upward trend in the fresh market in the longer term. Currently, the selling prices of bagged onions in the wholesale market range from 1.00-1.40 PLN/kg. This is 20 percent more than at the beginning of August when onions were the cheapest this season. And it might have been even more expensive if not for imports, which have already appeared in our market. Both from Uzbekistan (bag prices at 1.30-1.50 PLN/kg) and from the Netherlands (with prices at 1.50-1.70 PLN/kg).

It seems that the experts and participants in the onion market were right in claiming that the highest production growth this year was for early onions. However, in the case of onions from seeds, there will not be such a large increase in harvests, as unfavorable weather conditions had a very negative impact on this year's yields and significantly offset what should have been an increase in onion cultivation area.
