The supply of onions is increasing, but not the thick ones.

The onion season in Poland is still in its early stages, with last year's onions disappearing from the market, but the main harvest of new onions has not yet arrived. Currently, the market is dominated by young winter onions, available both peeled and with dried husks. Overall, there is an improvement in supply, but this year we are seeing a clear deficit in the production of larger calibers of onions due to unfavorable weather conditions.

This has led to an earlier onset of onion drying, which has prevented a significant portion of the crop from increasing in weight and caliber. This is expected to impact market realities and onion prices in wholesale markets due to the size differentiation. Thicker onions are still available on the fresh market in large quantities, with prices ranging from 2.00-2.10 PLN/kg, while smaller onions start at 1.60 PLN/kg (referring to bagged onions). Prices for winter onions with husks purchased by the sack mostly range from 0.70-1.00 PLN/kg.

The demand for onions in the fresh market remains stable, with a positive influence from exports, for example to Germany. Peeled white onions are priced at 3.00-4.00 PLN/kg in wholesale markets. In the second half of the current month, there was a slight upward trend in prices in this segment, driven by a slowdown in supply growth (due to unfavorable weather).

The situation is somewhat different for onions intended for peeling. Their prices have been falling and are currently at 0.40-0.50 PLN/kg (winter onions). The drop in prices for this commodity was largely due to an influx of imports from the Netherlands, which were flowing into Poland at low prices, around 0.30 PLN/kg.

The Dutch are eager to get rid of this poor-quality onion, which has little chance of finding another buyer, and selling to Poland, even at very low prices, is still a pure profit for them as they avoid the costs of disposing of the goods.
